The Department of Food Processing and Technology of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Oroquieta, Misamis Occidental (USTP Oroquieta) successfully conducted a two-day event on April 22–23, 2026 at the USTP Oroquieta Campus, with the theme “Lasa ng Pista: Innovation and Sustainability in Filipino Festival Foods.” The event highlighted the richness of Filipino culinary traditions while emphasizing innovation and sustainable practices in food processing.
The activity commenced with an opening program, where the Department Head, Mr. Conmar C. Malmis, delivered his opening remarks, inspiring students to embrace innovation while preserving Filipino food heritage. His message encouraged participants to apply their knowledge and skills in developing sustainable and culturally relevant food products. Throughout the two-day celebration, students actively engaged in a series of activities, including food product showcases, skills demonstrations, and interactive exhibits centered on Filipino festival foods.
These activities provided students with the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge into practical applications, particularly in developing innovative and sustainable food products using locally sourced ingredients.
The event also strengthened camaraderie and collaboration within the department, as students worked in teams to conceptualize and execute their presentations. It further enhanced their leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, with faculty members providing guidance and mentorship throughout the event.
The event reflects USTP Oroquieta’s unwavering commitment to delivering quality, industry-relevant education and bridging academic knowledge with real-world applications. By equipping students with practical skills and fostering innovation rooted in local resources, the campus actively contributes to community development and supports economic growth, particularly in strengthening the local food industry and promoting sustainable livelihood opportunities.
