The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Oroquieta, Misamis Occidental (USTP Oroquieta) showcased its growing excellence in research and innovation through its active participation in the 3rd Northern Mindanao Research and Innovation Summit held on April 28–30, 2026, at the Limketkai Center in Cagayan de Oro City.
Bringing pride and distinction to the campus, Ms. Ma. Liberty B. Doncillo earned Second Place in the Research Presentation under the Engineering and Built Environment Track. Her study, titled “Upcycling Laminated Sachets into Reusable Bags using the ‘Oripoly Technique’: Mechanical Performance, Environmental Implications, and Socioeconomic Viability,” emerged as one of the outstanding research presentations among participating institutions across Northern Mindanao. The study addressed the growing concern of plastic waste, particularly laminated sachets that are commonly used yet difficult to recycle. Through the innovative “Oripoly Technique,” the research explored the conversion of discarded sachets into durable and reusable bags. It further examined the products’ mechanical performance, environmental implications, and potential socioeconomic benefits, particularly in creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities.
Also representing USTP Oroquieta at the summit were faculty researchers Mr. Kelvin Mark P. Badiang, Ms. Luthie Q. Bongcawel, and Ms. Marevel B. Caburnay, who contributed to the exchange of knowledge and research initiatives during the conference. Meanwhile, Ms. Quenie Clarabal represented the student innovators through her poster presentation, demonstrating the active involvement of students in the university’s research and innovation endeavors.
Beyond the research presentations, the summit also provided a platform for participating institutions to exhibit their innovative products and community-based initiatives. USTP Oroquieta proudly featured Pan Asenso and Oripoly Crafts, showcased by Mr. Florante Mante and Ms. Monique Ratunil. These innovations reflected the campus’ strong commitment to sustainability, creativity, and community-centered development, while highlighting its continuous efforts to promote practical and impactful solutions through research and innovation.
USTP Oroquieta’s participation in the summit reflects its continuing commitment to advancing research that is relevant, responsive, and impactful. Ms. Doncillo’s achievement underscores the campus’ capability to produce innovative and sustainable solutions that address both environmental and socioeconomic challenges. By empowering faculty and students to develop initiatives that can be translated into community-based enterprises, USTP Oroquieta continues to contribute to local economic development while promoting environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.
