USTP Panaon Marine Biology faculty complete national fisheries biotechnology training

Two Marine Biology faculty members of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Panaon, Misamis Occidental (USTP Panaon) completed a five-day national training program on fisheries biotechnology and molecular biology held from June 1 to 5, 2026, in Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija.
Marjho Mae Cardoza and Ayth D. Paragoso participated in Biotechnology 101: Theory, Practice, and Applications in Fisheries, organized by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources–National Freshwater Technology Center (BFAR-NFTC) and the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI).
The training brought together educators, researchers, and fisheries professionals from across the country to strengthen their knowledge and practical skills in fisheries biotechnology and molecular biology.
Participants attended lectures and hands-on laboratory sessions covering fish morphology and data collection, DNA and RNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), gel electrophoresis, and primer design — techniques commonly used in fisheries research and aquatic science.
The training provided the participants with updated knowledge and laboratory skills applicable to classroom instruction, laboratory activities, student research, and extension programs. Their participation also supported the integration of current fisheries science methods and technologies into the Marine Biology program.
The faculty members’ participation in the national training contributed to USTP Panaon’s continuing efforts to strengthen instruction, research, and extension through faculty development and the adoption of current scientific practices.
