The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Panaon, Misamis Occidental (USTP Panaon) provided technical expertise during the installation of buoys, markers, and sinkers for the deployment of artificial coral reefs at Jimenez White Island, also known as Sperm Island, on June 22–23, 2026. The initiative was implemented in collaboration with the Philippine Coast Guard, the Local Government Unit of Jimenez, and Petron Corporation–Jimenez Depot, demonstrating a strong partnership among the academe, government, and private sector in advancing marine resource conservation.

Representing the University were Marine Biology faculty members Mr. Celso C. Almirol, Mr. Geson Earl P. Dalagan, and Mr. Mon Bernard Paradela, who provided scientific guidance throughout the activity. Their expertise ensured that the installation and deployment of artificial reef structures were carried out in accordance with established marine conservation principles and best practices, promoting biodiversity enhancement and the long-term sustainability of coastal ecosystems.

As the project’s technical partner, USTP Panaon helped ensure that the placement of buoys, markers, and artificial reef structures supported both navigational safety and habitat restoration. Through the application of science-based approaches, the activity aimed to improve marine habitat conditions, encourage coral growth, and provide refuge for fish and other marine organisms.

The initiative highlights the vital role of higher education institutions in supporting community-based environmental conservation through research, technical expertise, and stakeholder collaboration. USTP Panaon’s participation reflects the University’s commitment to advancing marine science, promoting sustainable coastal resource management, and contributing to the resilience of coastal communities through science, technology, and innovation.
