USTP strengthens sustainable innovation through Built Environment Laboratory

The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines, through the Office of the Director for Research and Innovation Centers and Institutes (ODRICI), officially inaugurated the Built Environment Laboratory on May 28, 2026, at USTP Cagayan de Oro.
The inauguration featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony, the unveiling of the laboratory marker, and a guided tour of the facility attended by USTP officials and guests. The newly launched laboratory will support research initiatives focused on sustainable and innovative solutions in the built environment sector, including indoor environmental quality, HVAC systems and controls, human interaction behavior, building decarbonization and life cycle assessment, and facade and integrated systems.
The laboratory was established through the leadership of Richard Jayson Varela, D.Eng., project leader of the Built Environment Laboratory and Director of the USTP Research and Innovation Centers and Institutes, with the support of Dr. Ambrosio B. Cultura II, USTP System President, and Engr. Niñaliza H. Escorial, Deputy Executive Director and Officer-in-Charge of the Executive Director of the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD).
