On May 26, 2023, the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) in Claveria, Misamis Oriental, conducted a capacity-building activity with its faculty members focusing on the preparation and development of instructional materials (IMs) at the Administration Building Function Hall, USTP Claveria.

The activity was made possible through the collaboration of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (OVCAA) led by the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Alexander L. Ido, and the Quality Assurance and Accreditation Office (QAA) led by the director, Ms. Ruby D. Tagocon. Engr. The said capacity-building is intended to equip the faculty members of USTP Claveria with clear guidelines and formats for creating instructional materials that will be beneficial to the learning process of the students across the semester.

Dr. Alexander L. Ido, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, stated in his opening remarks that the activity will address all questions, explanations, and protocols in the preparation and development of IMs.

Engr. Aileen A. Sierras, Director of the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CiTL) of the USTP System, served as the resource person for the activity. In her lecture, Engr. Sierras explained the formatting, cover pages, and content of the IM. She provided examples of IMs as a guide. She also stated that, while creating IMs, plagiarism and copyright violations must be considered.

 

“Plagiarism is copying an author’s exact phrase without acknowledgment, and copyright infringement is using copyrighted works without the author’s consent,” Engr. Sierras elaborated.

As part of the workshop, the participants were given the opportunity to present their IMs. They also inquired on how to enhance their IMs according to their department’s respective fields and specializations. Engr. Sierras responded with ideas for improvements based on the IMs that were presented.

 

The capacity-building proved timely as USTP Claveria aspires to produce IMs as one of the targets of the different colleges for Fiscal Year 2023 Office Performance Commitment Review.

Ms. Ruby D. Tagocon, Director of QAA, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the working committees for the successful conduct of the activity, which finally took place amidst the delays due to inadequate resources and conflict of schedules.
