ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language is a two-year graduate program that aims to equip today’s future leader- educator the necessary competencies in the field of English Language Teaching.

The course is designed for teachers, trainers, and other professionals from various fields of specialization who intend to become experts in English language teaching in basic, secondary, and tertiary education. The program trains students to teach effectively while obtaining a range of practical skills for teaching English as a Second Language and will prepare them to engage independently and critically with current language teaching and research issues.

This academic program will also give them the basic research skills they need to investigate language learning, and to help them develop their individual pedagogic style by reflecting on practice. Graduates are prepared for a solid foundation of professional knowledge and expertise for a teaching placement both local and international and provide skills to continue their professional development.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES
Upon graduating in the program, the students shall be able to:
 

a.) Apply critically the theories, principles, and methods of language teaching based on the foundation of education and in responding to the changing landscapes in education (i.e. synchronous and asynchronous modes of teaching)

b.) Demonstrate proficiency in language teaching such as but not limited to linguistics (sociolinguistics, pragmatics, etc. – we could also identify what specific branches of linguistics we are expert and capable of teaching), the macro skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking and viewing), based on the governing mandates, Philippine Professional Standards, ASEAN and Global standards for TESL professionals

c.) Utilize appropriately various strategies in delivering instruction both for face-to-face and online modes of teaching integrating educational and instructional-related technologies to enrich the language teaching and learning process

d.) Show mastery in verbal and non-verbal communication in multi-cultural and multi-lingual contexts

e.) Demonstrate professionalism and excellence through expanded leadership and significant technical contribution while promoting unity and stewardship in responding to the needs of the stakeholders and community partners

f.) Conduct and formulate research-based innovative ideas in relation to language teaching, developing instructional materials both in the print and online or digital platforms that could contribute to the best practices in teaching English and for the preservation and promotion of Filipino historical and cultural heritage based on RA 7722, as reflected in their contextualized IT-Based and non-IT-Based instruction and instructional materials.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Upon completion of the program, graduates can be employed as training and curriculum specialist, content and curriculum specialists, instructional design writer, curriculum designer and developer, consultant, and education supervisor. Likewise, the student can proceed to a doctorate program in language.
